Julia Holter

Foggy Notions presents

Julia Holter

The Button Factory, Dublin

December 10th, 2024

“My heart is loud,” Julia Holter sings on her sixth album Something in the Room She Moves, following an inner pulse. The Los Angeles songwriter’s past work has often explored memory and dreamlike future, but her latest album resides more in presence: “There’s a corporeal focus, inspired by the complexity and transformability of our bodies,” Holter says. Her production choices and arrangements form a continuum of fretless electric bass pitches in counterpoint with gliding vocal melodies, while glissing Yamaha CS-60 lines entwine warm winds and reeds. “I was trying to create a world that’s fluid-sounding, waterlike, evoking the body’s internal sound world,” Holter says of her flowing harmonic universe.

“What is delicious and what is omniscient?” she sings on “Spinning”, the album’s incantatory centerpiece. “What is the circular magic I’m visiting?” Or as Holter put it: “It’s about being in the passionate state of making something: being in that moment, and what is that moment?” She found it anew on Something in the Room She Moves, singing in somatic frequencies.

Julia Holter is a composer, performer, and recording artist based in Los Angeles. Her interest in sonic mysteries has led her to record in various settings--in her home, outside with a field recorder, and in recording studios—as well as to perform live, often with a focus on the voice and the space between language and babble. Holter’s music is multi-layered and texturally rich, often featuring an array of instruments played by an ensemble of creative musicians. She has amassed a body of work that explores melody within free song structures, atmosphere, and the impulses of the voice.
Julia released her latest album Aviary on Domino Records in 2018. Since the release of her previous albums Tragedy (2011) and Ekstasis (2012), Loud City Song (2013), and Have You In My Wilderness (2015), she has performed at venues and festivals throughout the world, including Europe, North & South America, Mexico, Asia and Australia. Julia was recently commissioned by the Chorus of Opera North to compose a score for the 1928 film The Passion of Joan of Arc, which she and the chorus performed to picture at the Barbican in 2022. She has also written music for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and scores for the TV show Pure (2019), the films Bleed for This (2016) and Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020), and for the documentary on the singer Karen Dalton, In My Own Time (2020).

BEAK> SURPRISE RELEASE THEIR FOURTH STUDIO ALBUM
- AVAILABLE MAY 28 VIA INVADA & TEMPORARY RESIDENCE LTD
+ EU // UK TOUR

Beak> formed in 2009 and since then have released three full length records, with each album title following their distinct format, >> (2012) >>> (2018). A new Beak> album might not come around often, but when it does, it always seems to capture a specific moment in time, a new set of elegies for the present moment.
With the surprise announcement and release of >>>> today, Beak> deliver another taste of a different moment, suspended in stasis and simultaneously rushing towards the vanishing point on the horizon.

At its core we always wanted it to be head music (music for the ‘heads’, not headphone music), listened to as an album, not as individual songs. This is why we are releasing this album with no singles or promo tracks."

The band continues, "the recording and writing initially began in a house called Pen Y Bryn in Talsarnau, Wales in the fall out from the weirdness of the Covid days. Remote and with only ourselves and the view of Portmeirion in the distance we got to work."
"With the opening track, "Strawberry Line" (our tribute to our dear furry friend Alfie Barrow, who appears on the albums cover) as the metronomic guide for the album, we then resumed recording, as before, at Invada studios in Bristol, whilst still touring around Europe and North/South America."

"After playing hundreds of gigs and festivals over the years we felt that touring had started to influence our writing to the point we weren’t sure who we were anymore. So we decided to go back to the origins of where we were at on our first album. With zero expectations and just playing together in a room."

The album’s producer Haluk Kurosman is behind the successful sounds of many Turkish pop-rock stars of that era, including maNga, Emre Aydın, Vega, and Göksel.

The album bagged Gripin numerous awards and its reputation grew beyond Turkey’s national borders. Since then, the band has undertaken six USA tours, two Australia tours, and countless European tours and concerts.

Three further studio albums have followed the chart-topping Gripin: MS. 05.03.2010(2010) and Yalnızlığın Çaresini Bulmuşlar (2012), and Nasılım Biliyor musun?(2017) and reworkings of existing material. The band are currently focusing on exclusive projects to mark their two decades in music.

MIKE

Foggy Notions Presents: MIKE

The Button Factory, Thursday 27th February 2025

General Onsale: Wednesday 23rd October at 10:00

MIKE is a quintessential old soul. The 24-year-old artist’s wisdom is
evident in both his calm delivery and measured questioning. Known for
introspective, subtly profound rhymes that explore grief, family, and
identity, and melt over muffled, soul-seasoned samples, MIKE’s newest
record, Burning Desire, is his biggest to date: both in length, but more
so artistically. For the first time in his career, MIKE truly reaches
outside of his immediate circle for collaborators, pulling in everyone
from Larry June to Liv.e to Lila Ramani (of Crumb) to Earl Sweatshirt
and more. The beloved rapper has come a long way from making waves in
underground hip-hop circles with the [sLUms] collective formed in New
York in 2015. Since, he’s released numerous critically celebrated
albums, earned Pitchfork’s Best New Music accolade twice, and toured
with artists like Blood Orange, Earl Sweatshirt, The Alchemist, and
Freddie Gibbs. Burning Desire sees MIKE confidently step out as the
leader of a new movement within hip hop, as he breaks through the
ceiling of the underground and introduces the style of rap he originated
to a wider audience. If anything is certain about this next chapter for
MIKE, it is that it will be on his own terms.

Sorry

Welcome to the world of Sorry. A band whose warped melodic sounds blur the lines of genre conventions and their two critically acclaimed records, 2020’s 925 and 2022’s Anywhere But Here have led to a devoted following on both sides of the Atlantic. Comprised of Asha Lorenz, Louis O’Bryen, Campbell Baum, Marco Pini and Lincoln Barrett, Sorry have been creating groundbreaking music since they were teenagers and have become the favourite band of everyone’s favourite band.

Their carefully curated pick-n-mix approach, combined with elegantly executed visuals, has led them to become one of the most vaunted bands in recent memory. The band has received praise from Dazed, The Guardian, Pitchfork and NME whilst also appearing on numerous BBC Radio 6 playlists and performing at all major festivals.

In 2024, the band returned with their new single “Waxwing”, a delightfully twisted track laced with a sense of foreboding, with towering synths that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on classic sci-fi soundtrack. The track received critical acclaim and points towards a bright future for the band in 2025 and beyond. Before then, they will be supporting Fontaines D.C. on their fully sold out tour of the UK and Ireland, giving crowds an early opportunity to hear what is on the horizon for Sorry.
