Crowbar Terrace: Sulk Rooms, Kayla Painter, James Adrian Brown

  • Button Factory Curved Street Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland (map)

Future Awkwardness is proud to present the Irish debut of three of the UK’s most thrilling new electronic artists – Sulk Rooms, Kayla Painter and James Adrian Brown. This triple bill of spectacular musical talent is a showcase of just how good the underground electronic scene across the Irish Sea is right now, and all three artists are hugely excited to be making their live debuts on these shores together at the Crowbar Terrace in Dublin’s iconic Button Factory. This will be a feast for the ears and the eyes, the mind and the soul. Don’t miss out on catching these artists in an intimate space with one of the city’s best musical setups.

Sulk Rooms:
A pseudonym of Yorkshire-based composer Thomas Ragsdale, the music of Sulk Rooms draws the link between euphoric electronica and smoke engulfed drones. Slow-morphing textures sequence and cascade, encapsulating intimate moments of colliding sound amongst fluttering arpeggios and transcending synth builds.
A predominant soundtrack artist included in many of Adam Curtis’ groundbreaking BBC documentaries as well as scoring BBC true crime series, Netflix features and Prada commercials, Sulk Rooms is part of Domino Publishing’s prestigious composer roster.
Atmospheric music for the head alongside the heart, Sulk Rooms' music captures spontaneous audio mirages and saturated imperfections within a crushing backdrop of low end and harmonic ferocity. Electric soundscapes and rising techno map Sulk Rooms' universe where panoramic pulses fuel adrenaline charged synths to feelings of both wonder and unease.
“Sulk Rooms summons slow moving and portentous drones that feel both elemental and diffuse” - Wire Magazine
“Ephemeral, elusive and gloriously unsettling” - Electronic Sound Magazine

Kayla Painter:
Kayla Painter is an experimental artist and producer.
Painter’s immersive, ever-evolving AV performances, made in collaboration with visual artist Jason Baker, are a natural consequence of the entire writing process – the visuals figure into the earliest stages of her music; 2019 saw her playing at events such as The Great Escape, Camp Elsewhere, Bluedot, and the inaugural edition of Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here festival. She has also crafted remixes for a string of well-regarded acts and labels including W.H. Lung (Melodic Records), Teddy Hunter (Bubblewrap Records) and Scrimshire (Albert's Favourites), as well as appearing on releases by the likes of Jilk (Project Mooncircle), among others.
Supported through Gilles Peterson's ‘Future Bubblers’ talent development program, Kayla has continued to make a lasting impact on key tastemakers in the UK. Her releases have received heavy airplay and features, with spins from Mary-Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft, Nemone and Huw Stephens on BBC 6Music, as well as Phil Taggart (BBC Radio 1) and BBC Introducing. She has written music for Disney, Channel 4, Discovery Channel and a range of independent films, as well as having been commissioned by Universal Publishing to write an EP for synch.

James Adrian Brown:
James Adrian Brown is the former lead guitarist of the alternative rock band Pulled Apart By Horses. After achieving chart success, touring the world, and releasing four critically acclaimed studio albums with PABH, James has begun paving a new path in instrumental electronic music and composition.
Brown’s solo work is heavily electronica-based, utilising analogue synths alongside tape machines, piano, strings, and immersive ambient atmospherics. His focus lies in the analogue process of capturing and creating sound using physical hardware.
He has received support from the likes of Gideon Coe on BBC 6 Music and Chris Hawkins, who championed him for creating “massive electronic soundscapes in a Mogwai kind of world.” James was also featured on BBC Radio 3’s Unclassified by host Elizabeth Alker.
Taking inspiration from artists such as Boards of Canada, Rival Consoles and Thom Yorke, Brown is exploring, evolving, and pushing his songwriting into bold new sonic territories. His debut album is set to be released at the end of this year on the revered UK electronic label Castles In Space, marking a significant new chapter in his journey as a solo artist.
